The Sunlight Vitamin: Vitamin D

by Dr. Sharleen Hawco ND November 06, 2008

Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin”. This is because when the UVB rays touch the skin, the body turns the UVB rays into vitamin D. Therefore, vitamin D can be made naturally in the body when it is exposed to the sun’s rays.

Vitamin D is an important vitamin for bone health. This is largely due to the fact that vitamin D increases the absorption of calcium in the body. Calcium is a mineral that is required for optimal bone health. Therefore, your body needs a sufficient amount of vitamin D in order to create healthy and strong bones, maintain bone strength and prevent bone diseases like rickets and osteoporosis.

Even though vitamin D can be made naturally in the body, our tissues can only store vitamin D for a limited amount of time. Thus, it may be necessary to supplement with vitamin D during the winter months or at any time where one is not getting sufficient amount of sunlight daily.
