Detox your Diet: Does an Apple a Day Keep the Doctor Away?

by Dr. Sharleen Hawco ND November 07, 2008

This common saying is actually true. Apples are a good source of fiber and antioxidants. Apples nutritional value can help reduce cholesterol levels, relieve constipation, boost the immune system, and overall promote optimal health.

Apples contain both insoluble and soluble fiber. Insoluble fiber binds to LDL cholesterol and removes it from the body, while the soluble fiber slows digestion down to stabilize blood sugar levels and permit better absorption of nutrients. An unpeeled apple contains more fiber than a peeled apple. These two types of fiber help relieve constipation, reduce cholesterol, and reduce the risk of arteries hardening, having a heart attack and getting diabetes.

Apples also contain flavonoids, which are commonly known for their antioxidant activity. Flavonoids, which are found high in apple peels, prevent oxidation (cell damage) in our bodies. This antioxidant effect helps boost the immune system, reduces damage to the arteries, and helps protect the body against cancer.

Therefore, yes, an apple a day does help keep the doctor away. Eating apples are an easy and inexpensive way to help protect the body and promote optimal health.
