Are bananas a good dietary source of vitamins and minerals?

by Dr. Sharleen Hawco ND November 28, 2008

As many already know, bananas is a good source of potassium. Potassium is an important mineral that plays a key role in many bodily functions. It is a mineral that is vital in cardiac health, bone health, and smooth muscle contraction. Thus, potassium is an important nutrient for normal heart, digestive, and muscular function in the body.

Many do not know that bananas are actually highest in vitamin B6 (also known as pyroxidine). Vitamin B6 is an important vitamin that is vital to the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It is also vital to the normal function of the nervous and to the immune system.

Bananas are also high in vitamin C, which we have now learned has antioxidant properties which help to boost the immune system, reduces damage to the arteries, and helps protect the body against cancer. Bananas are also a good source of fiber which help relieve constipation and reduce cholesterol.

So, continue to eat these fruits, which are delicious and also very good for your health.
